National Security Measures

Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
