EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

Additional Updates in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
